Kell Man Pleads Guilty to Aggravated Battery; Has Hate Crime Charge Dropped

June 10, 2016

A 27-year-old Kell man has pleaded guilty in Marion County Court to aggravated battery in a public place.

Timothy Morton of Morton Road admitted to punching the owner of Crossroads Tavern in Sandoval starting a fight in the bar in January 2014.   As part of the plea, a second count of aggravated battery in connection with the same incident and an unrelated charge of hate crime were dropped.  Sentencing is set for July 20th.

Morton had been accused in the hate crime charge of using a racial slur when addressing two African American juvenile males as they walked down a sidewalk in Centralia last year.
