Saturday Is Family Fun Day in the Park in Salem

June 11, 2016

Saturday will be the Salem Recreation Department and Marion County YMCA’s Family Fun Day in the park.

Activities begin at 7:30 Saturday morning with the fishing derby on the Salem Reservoir, with most of the other events scheduled from 10 to 2 in Bryan Memorial Park.  In addition to the annual fan favorite turtle races and 3-point shootout, this year with temperatures expected to reach the 90s, YMCA Director Jed Casburn says there will be ways to cool off, including the Slip N Slide Kickball Challenge.

“Since it is going to be so hot, we have a lot of water events.  New this year is exciting Slip and Slide Kick Ball.  It will be right beside the Aquatic Center.  Americana is going to be sponsoring that event.  Just walk up, getting a bat, and taking the challenge.   It is going to be very slippery.  We’re going to have big pools as bases,” said Casburn.

You can see how many goals you can score in 5 minutes by playing Human Foosball sponsored by the Salem Community Center as well as a life-sized game of Human Hungry Hippos sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

The turtle races are set to start at 10:45 at the Basketball Court.  Once again this year there will be prizes for the smallest, fastest and largest turtle.  There is a limit of two turtles per participant.

The 3 Point Shootout begins at 12:30 at the Bryan Park Basketball Courts, with participants having one minute to shoot as many baskets as possible from the three point line.

This is the first year that the Marion County YMCA has helped with the organization of Family Fun Day and Casburn says he is excited to make this the first of many successful years for the event.

“Marion County YMCA has only been around about three years and we couldn’t ask for a better outcome after three years partnering with the city of Salem.  They have been perfect.  It has been a great relationship.  We expect to be around many more family fun days,” said Casburn.

Free lunches will be provided by the gracious churches of Salem, kids crafts by Keep Salem Beautiful and inflatables by Kim’s Party Jumps.

Casburn also wants to thank all the volunteers and workers that have helped to organize the event.  He added that the event would not be possible without all of their hard work.

One thing that WILL NOT be taking place Saturday is $1 day at the pool.  That event will be held on a different Saturday this year.
