Mt. Vernon Man Sentenced To Maximum 30 Year Prison Term For Aggravated Battery of a Child

June 24, 2016

A Jefferson County Judge has sentenced a 29-year-old Mt. Vernon man to the maximum 30 years in prison on a Class ‘X’ felony charge of aggravated battery to a child under the age of 13.

A jury had found Michael Belmont guilty of the charge in February.  Prosecutors maintain Belmont severely beat a 3-year-old boy left in his care in 2014.   The boy sustained permanent brain and other injuries to his body for which he continues to suffer and receive therapy.

Belmont’s 28-year-old wife, Kaysie Belmont, earlier entered a guilty plea to reckless conduct for not immediately getting the boy medical care.  She was sentenced to 30 months probation.
