Suspect Arrested in Centralia in Connection With Mattoon Woman’s Death

June 24, 2016

A 33-year-old Mattoon man wanted in connection with the the shooting death of a Charleston woman over the weekend has been arrested in Centralia.

Centralia Police and the area’s Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) High Risk Entry Team joined Mattoon officers under the direction of Coles County State’s Attorney Brian Bower early Wednesday morning in executing a search warrant seeking the arrest of Shawn ‘Puffy’ Adamson.

Using a bullhorn, Adamson was told to come out of a home he was believed to have been staying in the 500 block of South Elm. Centralia Police Chief Doug Krutsinger said Adamson came out as ordered and was taken into custody without incident.

Adamson was arrested for alleged intimidation, aggravated discharge of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.  He was taken back to the Coles County Jail at Charleston to await further court action in connection with the death of 23-year-old Ciara Faires of Mattoon.

Mattoon Police earlier arrested three other Mattoon residents in connection with the early Saturday morning death.  Police initially responded to a report of gunfire being exchanged between two groups of people.  Faires was found wounded at the scene and taken to a Mattoon Hospital where she died less than hour later.

Krutsinger said his department was not familiar with Adamson.  He is believed to have  come to Centralia to stay with a female acquaintance after the shooting occurred in Mattoon.
