Two Men Charged in Fayette County with Theft of Pickup Burned Northwest of Patoka

Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith says four people have been tied to the theft of a stolen pickup truck in Vandalia early Saturday morning that later was found burned northwest of Patoka.

Formal charges have been filed in Fayette County Court against two of them, 21-year-old Trenten Smith of Patoka and 21-year-old Mason Dollins of Vernon.  Bond was set at $25,000 apiece during their first appearance in court. Both men were charged with felony theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor criminal trespass to a vehicle.

One other adult, whose name has not been released, and a juvenile, are also believed involved in the theft.

Patoka Fire Chief Blake Hyde says most of the fire had already burned out and just the shell of the vehicle owned by Tyler Meseke of Vandalia remained when they arrived on the scene around 5:30 Saturday morning.  Hyde said it appeared the pickup was driving at a high rate of speed on Bond Street where it curves to join Boat Dock Road north of the Patoka Park when it missed the curve, went out of control, and eventually became stuck while stradding the roadside ditch. At that point, Hyde reports it appears gasoline was poured from the road and allowed to run to the truck where it caught fire.  The truck had been stolen around one Saturday morning in Vandalia.

The sheriff says this case was solved due to the community’s help and the great work by the Fayette County Deputies.
