Mt. Vernon Motorcyclist Killed in Sunday Night Crash With Semi

June 29, 2016

A 44-year-old Mt. Vernon man was killed Sunday night when his motorcycle ran into the side of a cab of a semi-truck.  The crash occurred at the Veterans Memorial Drive intersection with the northbound exit ramp of Interstate 57-64.

Mt. Vernon Police Chief Chris Deichman says the cyclist, Chris Hopkins, was traveling westbound on Veterans Memorial Drive when the driver of a semi pulled from the exit ramp in front of him.  Deichman says it appears the semi driver, 73-year-old Thomas Gargrave of Ohio, had gotten off at the wrong exit and was crossing Veterans Memorial to get onto the northbound entrance ramp to get back on the Interstate.

Hopkins was pronounced dead on the scene.  Gargrave was not injured.  He was ticketed for failure to yield at a stop intersection.

A State Accident Reconstructionist is still investigating the crash and Illinois State Police have conducted an inspection of the truck.

The crash occurred at 8 Sunday night.
