Salem Business Owner Killed In SUV-Motorcycle Crash North of Patoka

July 2, 2016

A Salem business owner has been killed in a motorcycle-SUV collision on U.S. 51 just north of Patoka.

Marion County Deputy Coroner Doug Krutsinger identifies the motorcyclist killed as 47-year-old Kevin Koenegstein of North Everett Street in Odin.   He was the President and Owner of M and K Insurance Agency in Salem.

Krutsinger said Koenegstein and his wife, Mary, were traveling north on separate motorcycles when they encountered the southbound SUV in their lane of travel.  Both apparently tried to get off the road to avoid the SUV, but Kevin was still hit nearly head on.   His wife’s cycle was not struck and she was not injured.

Krutsinger says the SUV ran off the road following the crash and rolled in the roadside ditch.  The driver, whose name is not yet available, was injured and taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment.

The coroner says Kevin Koenegstein was loaded into a Patoka ambulance, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful and he died on his way to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Krutsinger said Koenegstein received multiple internal injuries.

Mary Koenegstein told Krutsinger the two were riding their motorcycles to visit relatives in Northern Illinois when the crash occurred around seven Saturday morning.

State Police are handling the accident.  A State Police Accident reconstructionist was called to the scene to try and determine how the wreck occurred.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies also assisted at the scene.
