Two Fatal Accidents in Southern Illinois Claim Three Lives

August 6, 2016

There were two fatal accidents in Southern Illinois on Friday.  The wrecks claimed three lives.

State Police say 72-year-old Carol Gean of Harbor Springs, Michigan was killed in a three vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 57 in Williamson County late Friday morning.   Gean was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by 72-year-old Robert Gean of Harbor Springs, Michigan.

The Gean pickup was slowing in traffic for an upcoming construction zone when it was hit in the rear by a semi driven by 28-year-old Gaganjot Virk of Bolingbrook, Illinois.  The impact of the crash pushed the Gean truck into the rear of a straight truck in front of it driven by 49-year-old Tab Barks of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Robert Gean was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana while Barks was airlifted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.  Virk sustained minor injuries.  He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and following too closely.

Two people were killed in a single car crash in Jasper County early Friday night.  State Police say 56-year-old Christopher Zuber of Saint Marie was traveling southbound on the Saint Marie Road when the driver lost control and it left the west side of the road.  After leaving the roadway, Zuber continued traveling in the west ditch and ultimately struck a creek embankment and then came to rest pointing east.

Zuber along with a seven year old male juvenile passenger were killed in the crash.  A 3-year-old male juvenile was transported by Air Evac to Carle Hospital in Urbana for treatment of injuries.
