Centralia Police Make Arrest in Connection With July Stabbing

August 8, 2016

Centralia Police have made an arrest in connection with a July 8th stabbing.

27-year-old Jerrod Simpson of Edwards Street in Vandalia has been charged with aggravated battery in connection with the stabbing of 22-year-old Richard Atkinson of East Broadway in Centralia in the eye.

Simpson was stopped by police when he was seen running across Poplar at Kerr Street on Sunday.   He allegedly admitted being wanted on warrants and was arrested on both Marion County and Department of Corrections warrants.    Simpson was also charged with possession of a controlled substance after police found two baggies in a cigarette package that tested positive for methamphetamine and cocaine.

Police reports indicate Atkinson was stabbed in the eye during a fight outside a home where he had been staying in the 100 block of Johnson Street.   He was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Atchison told police at the time he had walked with another man to the northwest side neighborhood to sell a couple grams of weed to a friend.  The other man told Atchison to hold on and left, but never returned.   Atchison said when he walked to the home where he was staying two people jumped him in the front yard and began punching and stomping on him while claiming he had stolen their weed.  During the altercation, Atkinson said Simpson pulled a knife and stuck him in the face.

Atkinson was able to run next door, where the residents called 9-1-1.  Simpson and the other man reportedly took off on foot before police arrived and could not be located.

After being taken into custody on Sunday, Simpson told police he was not involved in any fight with Atchison and didn’t see Atchison in a fight that day.  He is being held in the Marion County Jail pending a first appearance in court.
