Theft of Car in Centralia Ends Quickly in Crash

August 8, 2016

Hannah Cornell

Centralia Police arrested a 20-year-old Nashville man for theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident early Saturday morning.

Centralia Police say Cornell Hannah of Kaskaskia Street allegedly took car keyes from Sabrina Smith of South Marion Street in Centralia after she tried to hide them from him.  As Hannah left the residence he allegedly told Smith he was going to take police on a high speed chase.

Smith called 9-1-1 to report the incident, but almost as quickly Hannah lost control of the car at Calumet and Marion Street and crashed into a garage at 902 South Marion Street.  Hannah ran from the scene, but was arrested about 15 minutes later when he returned to Smith’s home.

Hannah was taken to the Marion County Jail where he remained on Sunday.
