Fire Damages Cake Lady Cafe in Kinmundy

August 17, 2016

A fire Wednesday morning damaged the Cake Lady Restaurant at 300 East Sycamore in Kinmundy.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says the fire was confined to the building housing the kitchen, with minor smoke damage to the restaurant dining area which is a separate building connected by a hallway.

Day reports one of the owners, Wayne Hoard, had turned on a fryer and went back to sit with a customer when they smelled smoke.  The kitchen was full of smoke at that time and the fire department was called.  By the time, firemen arrived the fire had broken out a window and flames were coming out the window.

The blaze was confined to the kitchen, but there was heavy smoke and heat damage.  Day says the damage is reparable, but the restaurant will be shut down until repairs can be made.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.  The State Fire Marshals office has been asked to investigate.

There were no injuries.

Wayne Hoard owns the business along with his wife Tammy.  Their home is next door.  It was not threatened by the fire.

The fire call came in at 7:45 Wednesday morning.  Firemen were on the scene about an hour.
