Salem Police Continue to Investigate Damage Done By Truck Driver on Missouri Avenue

September 15, 2016

Salem Police say a semi truck driver struck a building, caused a major power outage and a gas leak after turning between two buildings on West Missouri Avenue.

The incident occurred between Claire’s Gaming Cafe and the Burger King Restaurant around 8:15 Tuesday night. Police say the trucker struck the Claire’s building, causing damage to a corner of the the roof. He then hit an electric pole between the two businesses, setting off a power outage that lasted until the early morning hours for some customers.

Salem Public Works Director John Pruden said the truck moved the power pole in the ground far enough it pinched the natural gas service line to Burger King, causing a small gas leak. Since the leak was on the service line, Burger King was the only gas customer effected. The city has installed a new gas line to the business so they could reopen in time for lunch.

The truck also hit a Charter Cable TV box before eventually getting back on Missouri Avenue and West Main. Police say the trucker left the scene without stopping.

Police say a witness obtained some identifying information on the truck and with the help of the JB Hunt Dispatch Center were able to locate the driver who returned to Salem Wednesday morning to meet with police. The accident report has not been completed and tickets are pending.

Ameren officials say the outage impacted 371 customers, including Wal-mart, Burger King, Huck’s, and the XPO Logistics trucking terminal. Ameren spokesperson Brian Bretsch says the movement of the electric pole resulted in one of the three phases of the line being damaged. That tripped a breaker at the substation. Bretsch reports they were able to get all but nine customers back on by midnight by transferring service to other lines. The other nine got power back at 4:20 Wednesday morning.
