Centralia Man Killed in Late Sunday Afternoon Motorcycle Crash

September 27, 2016

A 52-year-old Centralia man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a late Sunday afternoon motorcycle crash on the Dekemper Curves on U.S. 50 between Shattuc and Carlyle.

Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon says Jeffrey Young was traveling westbound when the cycle went out of control and ran off the road. He was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A passenger, Jody Blackwell of Vandalia, was injured in the crash. She was initially taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital and then transferred by ambulance to a St. Louis Hospital.

Blackwell told investigators that both she and Young heard a loud noise apparently caused by a malfunction of the motorcycle. When they looked down at the source of the noise, Young lost control of the cycle. She thinks they may have blown a tire or hit a piece of rubber from an old tire.

An autopsy completed Monday indicated Young died as a result of blunt force trauma. Toxicology samples were sent to the lab.

Funeral services for Jeffrey Young are pending at the Sutherland Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia.
