University of Illinois Police Search for Suspects in Shootings That Left One Dead and Four Injured

September 27, 2016

University of Illinois police say they’re searching for suspects after two shootings over the weekend left one dead and four injured.

University Police Department chief Jeff Christensen says one of the injured victims was a student. Authorities have identified the man who died early Sunday as 22-year-old George Korchev of Mundelein. Authorities say Korchev and the four injured were not involved in the shootings and were just walking by when the shootings occurred. Those injured had non-critical wounds.

University of Illinois Chancellor Robert J. Jones said in an email to campus that a public vigil is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday on the Main Quad to support the shooting victims. It will include a moment of silence and speeches from campus leaders.

Jones says the victims were “bystanders caught in a senseless act of violence.”

Officials at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville say 22-year-old George Korchev of Mundelein was expected to start Monday as a registered nurse. He recently passed his nursing board exam.

Hospital officials say Korchev was “known as a skilled, empathetic and selfless caregiver.”
