Police Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Centralia

Illinois State Police have been called in to conduct an independent investigtion into a shooting involving a Centralia Police Officer Tuesday night.

Interim Centralia Police Chief Brian Atchison says the department responded to a report of a suspicious/ unwanted subject possibly under the influence of drugs, outside a residence in the 1000 block of South Bond Street in Centralia. Shortly after arriving, an officer was involved in a shooting with the suspect.

Atchison says the officer was uninjured. The suspect was initially taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital and then transferred to a St. Louis area hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries that were sustained. No other details are being released on how the shooting occurred.

The name of the officer and the person involved in the shooting are not currently being released.

Atchison says as required by state law, State Police were called to conduct an independent investigation. Atchison anticipates any further releases will come from state police.
