Garage-Small Apartment in Centralia Damaged in Tuesday Afternoon Fire

November 16, 2016

A fire damaged a 24-by-60 foot detached garage in Centralia Tuesday afternoon that contained a small second story apartment over part of the building.

No one was in the building at 126 North Pine at Noleman Street when the fire broke out. Centralia City Firefighters say the fire appeared to have started in a makeshift bedroom in the apartment area occupied by Iris Sidney.

Firemen were initially prevented from fighting the fire due to a power line that had burned in two that was moving around on the roof. All available Centralia City Firemen were called in to fight the blaze.

The fire was confined to the bedroom area of the upper story apartment and also burned the roof of the one story portion of the building. The rest of the building sustained heat, smoke and water damage. The value of the building and contents was placed at $15,000, with the loss estimated at $6,000.

There were no injuries.

Fire officials say the building was in the estate of Lee Meeks. His son Darrell Meeks was living in the house on the front of the property.
