Battery charges for teens in fight with girl who died of asthma attack

November 20, 2016

SHELBYVILLE – Two 16-year-old girls have been charged as juveniles with aggravated battery in connection with the alleged beating of a 13-year-old girl who died from an asthma attack less than two hours after the fight.

The charges are not connected to the girl’s death. Shelby County State’s Attorney Gina Vonderheide said Friday that the teens were charged with aggravated battery because the fight took place at a public park.

Vonderheide added that the fight lasted about a minute, according to the videos viewed by investigators.

Alexis Faith Williams died early June 17 as the result of a severe bronchial asthma attack, according to the Bloomington medical examiner who performed her autopsy. A coroner’s jury ruled in August that her death resulted from natural causes.

Shelbyville police have said Alexis was in a verbal altercation with a 16-year-old in a restaurant parking lot. Both girls went with their respective friends to Forest Park. The fight took place between the basketball and beach volleyball courts on the west side of the park, a police officer testified during the coroner’s inquest.
