Mt. Vernon Man Killed in I-64 Crash

December 3, 2016

State Police say a 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been fatally injured in a pickup truck-semi crash on Interstate 64 two miles west of Nashville.

Preliminary details indicate the pickup truck driven by the Mt. Vernon man was traveling eastbound when it exited the roadway to the left and crashed into a guard rail. The pickup then came back onto Interstate 64 and crossed over both eastbound lanes of traffic and sideswiped a concrete bridge. The pickup then came to a rest in the center of the eastbound lanes.

A semi driven by 62-year-old Santiago Reyes of Yelm, Washington was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. The semi struck the driver’s side of the pickup.

The Washington County Coroner’s Office pronounced the pickup truck drive deceased on the scene. His name has not yet been released pending family notification.

The roadway was closed for nearly six hours beginning just before midnight Friday night for nearly six hours for crash investigation and scene clean up.

The crash is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. There are no charges pending at the present time.
