Shots fired call results in weapons, resisting arrest charges in Mt. Vernon

MOUNT VERNON — A report of shots fired Friday night resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old man on weapons charges following a brief foot chase with Mt. Vernon police.

William Ballard was arrested for alleged unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, and resisting arrest.

According to police, they responded around 9:25 p.m. Friday, to a report of a gunshot fired in the 2500 block of Casey in Mt. Vernon.

While checking the area, officers attempted to make contact with Ballard, who fled on foot but was taken into custody a few blocks away.

During their investigation, officers reportedly located a loaded handgun, resulting in the weapons charges against Ballard.

He was taken to the Jefferson County jail, where he remains awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
