Christmas Afternoon Target Practice Sends Bullet into Rural Salem Home

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies say a gunshot that entered the Fred Hilger home in the 24-hundred block of Summertime Road in rural Salem late Christmas afternoon was a freak accident.

Deputies say several persons target practicing 2,000 feet away had one of the bullets skip over an ice covered pond and continue through a wall of the Hilger home into a room where his six-year-old grandson narrowing missed getting hit.

Deputies say the man who fired the 9 millimeter gun that had the bullet found in the house has apologized and agreed to pay for the cost to repair the home.

The incident was reported to the sheriff’s department at 4:08 Sunday afternoon.
