Aviston Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison on Criminal Sexual Assault Conviction

January 12, 2017

A 33-year-old Aviston man has been sentenced in Clinton County Court to ten years in prison on two counts of felony criminal sexual assault.

Diago Salazar was earlier found guilty of committing acts of sexual penetration in with an adult female who was unable to give knowing consent in a November bench trial. The incident occurred in Aviston in August 2015.

Salazar was also ordered to pay $1,755 in restitution for counseling services provided to the victim, plus court costs. Cash bail Salazar had posted before his conviction will be used to pay for the restitution and court costs.

State’s Attorney John Hudspeth says under the Illinois Truth-in-Sentencing law, Salazar will have to serve at least 85% of the sentence. He will then be subject to mandatory supervised release for three years to life after release from prison and will be required to register as a sex offender. Hudspeth says the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have placed a hold on Salazar and he believes he will be deported to Mexico after he serves his prison sentence.

Hudspeth says the cooperative efforts of the victim and the Aviston Police Department were instrumental in the successful prosecution of Salazar.
