One Person Has Been Arrested for Attempted Murder Following the Shooting of 2 People at Salem Party

January 15, 2017

One person is in custody and two others were injured when gunfire broke out at a party at a home in the 700 block of Markland Street in Salem late Friday night.

Salem Police have confirmed the two who were shot and taken to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment as 21-year-old Jacob Joyner of East Bennett Street in Salem and 20-year-old Jacob Hayes of East Lester in Salem.

One person has been arrested by Salem Police for attempted murder in connection with the case. 18-year-old Tyler Caswell of Salem remains in the Marion County Jail pending the filing of formal charges.

Marion County State’s Attorney Bill Milner expects to be able to review the police reports on Sunday and make a final decision on charges and have bond set since court is not in session Monday due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Holiday.

Milner says it is his understanding that Hayes will be able to be interviewed about the case on Sunday. He notes while police have questioned many at the party, the two who were shot probably have the most information.

Salem Police had initially responded to the home at 10:37 Friday night to a report of shots fired. They then spent most of the night questioning those in attendance.

Salem Police were assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Odin Police, Kinmundy Police and Illinois State Police.

Reynolds says the Salem Police Department is continuing their investigation.
