Chicago Police Officer Charged with Murder in Off-Duty Shooting

January 19, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) – First-degree murder charges have been filed against a Chicago police officer in the fatal off-duty shooting of a 38-year-old man earlier this month.

Jose Nieves was shot to death on Jan. 2. On Wednesday, Lowell Houser was charged. The 28-year veteran is to appear for a bond hearing on Thursday.

Authorities say Houser was off-duty when he became involved in a confrontation with Nieves, which ended with gunfire. Police later said Nieves did not have a weapon.

Shortly after the incident, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said he had more questions than answers about the incident. He also said the officer and Nieves were involved in a prior confrontation.

Houser is the second police officer charged with criminality in recent days. An officer was arrested Saturday for felony criminal sexual assault against an underage girl.
