Mt. Vernon Police Arrest Second Person In Connection with January Murder

Mt. Vernon Police say a second person has been arrested for first-degree murder in the January 20th shooting death of 26-year-old Deandray Jackson.

Police report 20-year-old John F. Wells was arrested by the U.S. Marshals on the Jefferson County warrant at a private residence in the St. Louis suburb of Bridgeton, Missouri Wednesday afternoon. Bond on the warrant was set at $3-million. Wells is being held in the St. Louis City Justice Center awaiting extradition back to Jefferson County.

Mt. Vernon Police announced the arrest of 18-year-old Lekedrieon Russell of Mt. Vernon for first-degree murder on January 31st after he was picked up on a warrant by the U.S. Marshals service in Springfield, Illinois.

The murder charge against Russell indicates Jackson was shot while attempting to rob him the night of the murder. The incident occurred in an alleyway off the 1800 block of Conger Avenue. Jackson, who lived in California, was back home visiting family in Mt. Vernon at the time the shooting occurred.

Two more arrests were made earlier in connection with the case. 21-year-old Dantrez Brown has been charged with felony obstruction and a 17-year-old juvenile has been charged with robbery and mob action.

Mt. Vernon Police say the murder investigation is ongoing.
