Boyd Man Arrested on Drug and Assault Charges After Allegedly Making Threats While Armed With Machete

February 20, 2017

A 28-year-old Boyd man has been arrested on drug and assault charges after allegedly threatening a Centralia resident while armed with a machete.

John Kaufman of East Seven Oaks Drive is being held in the Marion County Jail for possession of a controlled substance, aggravated assault, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Centralia Police say they were called to the home of Dawn Ferguson on South Sycamore Street early Sunday morning after the man allegedly threatened to have people come shoot up her apartment. Kaufman was found walking nearby when police arrived. By that time he had put the Machete down.

Ferguson told police that she had lent Kaufman $20 earlier. He later returned asking her to hold his belongings until he could go get her money. When Kaufman returned he reportedly didn’t have the money, but offered to give Ferguson the Machete and later methamphetamine to cover his debt. When Kaufman was told ‘no’, he allegedly began making the threats.

Police found the machete and a small container that contained a small amount of a white crystal substance that tested positive for meth. Police also searched a back pack Kaufman had left at the Ferguson home and allegedly found a syringe w2ith meth residue inside.

Police received the call at 3:49 Sunday morning.
