Fayette County Coroner Releases Identity of Woman Killed in Thursday Afternoon Crash

Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen has released the identity of the person killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash on U.S. 51 just north of Shobonier early Thursday afternoon.

62-year-old Dianna Helton of Shobonier had been pronounced dead at the scene, but a positive identification could not be made until an autopsy was completed Friday. Her body was reportedly burned beyond recognition. The cause of death is still pending.

Illinois State Police say preliminary investigative details indicate Helton was traveling northbound on US 51 when just north of Fayette County Road 1000N she crossed into the southbound lane, left the roadway and traveled down the shoulder. The van then struck a fence and a tree as it hit the embankment of a small creek. upon impact, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

The Vandalia Fire Department was called to put out the fire and to assist with extrication.
