Fire Causes Minor Damage to Salem Home; U-Haul Tire Starts Two Grass Fires

April 9, 2017

Salem Fire Protection District Firemen were called out twice on Friday.

One call was to the Jim Grasher home at 109 Missouri Avenue where siding on the front north side of the home caught fire as Grasher was attempting to burn off weeds near the foundation of his home with a torch. Grasher had not noticed the torch had apparently set some of the siding on fire until a passing motorist told him his house was on fire. The fire was confined to a portion of the siding on the front north side of the home. There was a smoke smell inside the home, but firemen say they were able to eject it without any apparent lasting damage. The fire call came in early Friday night.

Earlier in the day, firemen fought two grass fires, both apparently started from a burning wheel that came off a U-Haul truck after an electric brake or wheel bearing problem. The grass fires broke out at the 109-mile marker near the Route 161 interchange on both the west side and median. There was no other damage to the U-Haul other than to the wheel assembly and tire. That fire call came in at 1 Friday afternoon.
