Centralia Administrator for Secretary of State’s Office Under Investigation

May 8, 2017

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office confirms a 55-year-old Centralia woman who runs the office that determines if vanity license plate applications are approved or barred as objectionable is under investigation.

The Head of Communications for the Secretary of State, Dave Druker, confirms Candace Wanzo has been placed on paid administrative leave because of the unnamed allegations that have been brought to the attention of Secretary of State Jesse White.

The statement from the office indicates Secretary White is troubled by these recent developments. It says they are not able to provide specific information on personnel matters and investigations other than to say they take all allegations of misconduct very seriously and investigate them thoroughly.

The investigation is being headed by Illinois Inspector General Jim Burns and the Inspector General for the Secretary of State’s Office.

Wanzo was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday.

Records indicate she was hired as a secretary in 1999 and worked her way up to her current ‘Executive Five’ that has a salary of $87,336.

Wanzo pleaded guilty in federal court in East St. Louis in 1991 of embezzling $234,000 from the bursar’s office at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, where she was employed at the time. She received a 15 month federal prison sentence.
