May 30, 2017

State Police say six people were injured in a three-vehicle crash on northbound I-57 seven miles north of Salem Sunday night.

The crash apparently began when 53-year-old Michael Medina of Brookfield struck a deer in the middle of the roadway. A car driven by 30-year-old Jill Edwards of Braidwood stopped in time to avoiding hitting the Medina vehicle but was unable to avoid striking the deer. A third vehicle driven by 32-year-old Cinda Rae Hamilton of Effingham was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the rear of the Edwards vehicle.

Edwards and four passengers in her car and a passenger in the Hamilton SUV were all injured and taken by ambulance to Salem Township Hospital for treatment. The passengers in the Edwards vehicle are identified as 32-year-old Christopher Edwards, 51-year-old Tina Fonck, as well as an 11-year-old male and 5-year-old female, all from Braidwood. The passenger injured in Hamilton’s car is identified as 30-year-old Kristi Duckwitz of Effingham.

The crash occurred at 9:28 Sunday night. No charges have been issued pending further investigation.
