Sandoval Woman Returned to Marion County to Face Kidnapping Charge

June 17, 2017

A 37-year-old Sandoval woman made her first appearance in Marion County Court Friday after being returned from Florida to face a kidnapping charge.

Bond on the arrest warrant for Crystal Berkel of South Maple was earlier set at $100,000.

Berkel is accused of knowingly and secretly confining an infant after removing the child from the state without the consent of the girl’s mother. The incident occurred on May 24th.

Sandoval Police Chief Joe Lyons says Berkel was located by Florida Police in a rest stop with the infant about 48 hours later. At that point, she was taken into custody and the child was returned safely and uninjured to a relative.

An arrest warrant was then issued and Berkel was returned via prisoner transport to Marion County on Thursday.

Berkel had the public defender appointed to represent her during Friday’s court appearance. A first appearance with attorney is set for June 27th.
