Salem Man Involved in I-70 Crash in Cumberland County That Injures One of His Passengers

July 3, 2017

A Salem man crashed into the rear of another vehicle in a traffic backup on Interstate 70 in Cumberland County east of Effingham on Friday night.

State Police say preliminary investigation indicates a pickup truck driven by 36-year-old Gilbert Jason Sidener of Salem was traveling eastbound on I-70 when he ran into the rear of an SUV driven by 34-year-old Samuel Murray of Swansea. He told police he did not see the Murray vehicle slowing in front of him in time to get his own vehicle slowed down in time. The impact knocked the Murray vehicle off the roadway into the center median, while the Sidener pickup ran down an embankment on the south side of the interstate.

Both drivers escaped injury, but a passenger in the Sidener vehicle, 36-year-old April Lepes of Salem, was taken to a Terre Haute, Indiana hospital for treatment of injuries.

State Police ticketed Gilbert Sidener for failure ot reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
The crash occurred at 8:25 Friday night.
