Jefferson Rural and Salem Firefighters Keep Busy

July 10, 2017

Jefferson Rural Firemen say a hay baler was destroyed by fire on the Robert Payne property on North Harmony Lane south of Route 15 east of Mt. Vernon early Saturday night. Fire officials say the baler had been shut off for about an hour when the fire broke out and consumed the machine and started a small grass fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Firemen say the grass fire caused no additional damage.

Earlier on Saturday, Jefferson Rural Firemen were called to a field fire on the Kendall Payne property east of Texico. A few acres burned, but no damage was reported. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined. The fire call came in at 11:30 Saturday morning.

Salem Firemen were called out early Sunday morning to a report of log ends burning along South Broadway near Lake Street. Firemen determined the fire was a controlled burn and allowed the logs to continue to burn.

On Saturday, firemen were called to Salem Township Hospital when the fire alarm system went off. It turned out to be a false alarm.
