Chicago Man Arrested Following Armed Robbery of Centralia Woman

July 16, 2017

A 32-year-old Chicago man is being held in the Marion County Jail on multiple charges after allegedly threatening to kill a Centralia woman if she would not give him money to get back to Chicago.

Andrew Mattox was arrested for armed robbery, unlawful restraint, aggravated assault and domestic battery.

Police say Mattox had come to Centralia to meet the woman in person after the two had met on-line. He allegedly became angry when she told him she didn’t have any money to give him. Mattox claimed to need the money to be able to get back home. He reportedly became upset and put a knife to the woman’s throat. She told police she was able to calm Mattox down and he put down the knife down after she agreed to withdraw some money with her debit card.

Once outside her Maulding Street apartment, Mattox allegedly ordered her into the passenger side of his vehicle. He then went to the back of the pickup to reportedly get something to kill her with. In the process, the woman moved into the driver’s seat and drove to the Centralia Police station to report the incident. Policed reports indicate Mattox had allegedly taken the woman’s cell phone earlier.

While she was reporting the incident, Mattox called Centralia Police to report his truck had been stolen. He was taken into custody following questioning and after video surveillance of housing authority property seemed to confirm the woman’s story.
