Dixon Man Killed in Crash North of Shobonier

July 16, 2017

A 78-year-old Dixon man was killed when the motor home he was driving sideswiped an on-coming vehicle on U.S. 51 a mile north of Shobonier in southern Fayette County late Friday afternoon.

State Police say James Allen Brown later died from his injuries at the Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia. Three others were injured in the crash.

Preliminary investigative details indicated the motor home driven by Brown and towing a passenger car crossed the centerline of U.S. 51 and sideswiped a pickup truck hauling an enclosed trailer driven by 72-year-old Lewis Nelson of Mulberry Grove. The crash occurred on the grassy east northbound shoulder. The motor home rolled over on its top in the east ditch. The pickup also came to rest in the east ditch.

Brown had to be extricated from the motor home. A passenger in the motor home, 67-year-old Carol Brown of Dixon, was injured along with Lewis Nelson and a passenger in his pickup truck, 69-year-old Una Nelson of Mulberry Grove. All three were taken to the Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia for treatment.

The investigation into the crash is continuing. It occurred at 4:21 Friday afternoon near the intersection of Fayette County Road 1075N.
