Fire Destroys Home on South Sycamore in Centralia

July 17, 2017

The State Fire Marshal’s office has been asked to investigate the cause of a fire that destroyed one home and damaged a second in the 500 block of South Sycamore Street in Centralia Saturday night.

Centralia Fire Officials say a home occupied by Keith and Johanna Gregg and Katlynn Hoffman at 521 South Sycamore had fire and smoke coming from the rear of the structure upon their arrival. The fire than spread through the rest of the home as firemen dealt with multiple roofs and ceilings that had been added over the years. The rear of the home burned off while the front portion of the home was gutted with just some of the walls remaining.

All three occupants were able to get out of the home safely, but a pet dog with five puppies were killed in the fast moving fire. They lost all of their possessions. The fire department estimates the loss at $28,000 for buildings and contents. The home is owned by Terry Alvis of Walnut Hill.

The fire was so hot it also caused damage to a neighboring home on South Sycamore occupied by Ed and Sherry Richards. Fire officials say the home sustained heat damage to the siding, windows and soffit as well as to a fence.

Firemen received the initial call at 8:20 pm. They remained on the scene until three Sunday morning. All available city firefighters were called to the scene. The new part-time firefighters recently added to the department were called in for their first structure fire.
