James E. White was arrested just before midnight Monday after a traffic stop at Route 161 and 127 in Clinton County.

According to Clinton County Sheriff Doug Maue, a deputy conducted the traffic stop and reportedly noticed White had an open container in the car.

Maue says the deputy is the county’s K-9 officer, and after having White complete field sobriety testing asked if the dog could to a check outside the vehicle.

White reportedly gave permission and the dog twice alerted on the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly revealed cannabis and cocaine in the car.

White was subsequently taken to the Clinton County Jail and was formally charged later Monday morning in Clinton County Court with Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of between 10-30 grams of cannabis.

His bail was set at $10,000 and he was released from the Clinton County Jail after posting $1,000 cash bond.

White’s request in court Monday for the appointment of a public defender was denied. He is next scheduled to appear in court July 24 for a status hearing.

CHS Superintendent Chuck Lane confirms that White teaches Social Science at the school and has been employed by CHS for 30 years.
