Kell Woman Injured in Crash With Tree Knocked Down by Storm

July 23, 2017

A 22-year-old Kell woman has been airlifted from the scene of a wreck blamed on a tree that fell across Route 37 during the severe thunderstorm activity early Sunday morning.

State Police say Morgan Hawkins was northbound on Route 37 when she struck the large tree in the roadway, then ran off the road, and hit another tree. Kell Firemen had to extricate Hawkins from the vehicle.

Hawkins was taken by Air Evac to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment of injuries.

The crash occurred just before six Sunday afternoon a short time after the severe weather had moved through.

Kell Fire Chief Lonnie McDaneld says the tree was also hit by the driver of a second vehicle. After seeing the Hawkins vehicle, he swerved and crashed into a power pole. McDaneld says the man, whose name was not immediately available, escaped injury.
