Former Iuka Man Killed In Weekend Motorcycle Accident

April 8, 2013

A 36-year-old Herrin resident, who was originally from Iuka, was killed in a weekend motorcycle accident in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reports the cycle driven by James D. Greenwood was eastbound on the Makanda Road Saturday night when it ran off the pavement, struck a guard rail, and went down a steep embankment.  Both Greenwood and a passenger on the cycle, 36-year-old Shelly Dwyer of Herrin, were thrown from the motorcycle.  Green was pronounced dead from his injuries by the Jackson County Coroner at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

Dwyer was initially taken to the Carbondale hospital and then airlifted to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment of injuries.  The crash occurred at 7:05 Saturday night.

Greenwood was a student preparing to be a coal miner.  There will be no public funeral services.  The Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem is in charge of arrangements.
