November 6, 2016

A 50-year-old St. Elmo man has died in an early Saturday morning car-pedestrian accident on U.S. 40 a quarter mile west of St. Elmo.

State Police identify the victim as Gregory Stoner.

Preliminary investigative details indicate Stoner was walking west in the driving lane of U.S. 40 west of St.Elmo after crashing his car in a private driveway. A car driven by 22-year-old Ashley Lakin of Brownstown swerved into the roadside ditch on the southside of the roadway in an attempt to avoid hitting Stoner. It overturned on its top before coming to a stop.

Stoner was pronounced dead on the scene by the Fayette County Coroner. Lakin was taken to St.Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham for treatment of apparent minor injuries.

The incident occurred at 3:01 Saturday morning.
